“I had never come across such a vision of the board and a veritable avalanche of variations …”. Boris Zlotnik had seen many gifted youngsters, but this was clearly something else.

When Fabiano Caruana was 12 years old, with a rating of 2180, he started working with Boris Zlotnik, a well-known chess trainer and brilliant methodologist from Moscow. Besides Fabiano’s talent, there was more good news: the young American turned out to have a tremendous capacity for hard work.

Two years later his rating was 2530, and at 14 years, 11 months and 20 days, Fabiano Caruana became the youngest Grandmaster in the history of the United States and embarked on a glorious career.

We are proud to present GM Alexander Kalinin’s timely book on the first American since Bobby Fischer to play for the world title. Kalinin traces Caruana’s career, analyses the role of his various trainers (Zlotnik obviously wasn’t the only one), explains the development of his playing style and teaches a thing or two about chess skills that really matter .

Alexander Kalinin, whom you may know as the author of the bestselling Chess Training for Candidate Masters, has included games up until April of this year. His book is divided in two parts: Part 1: The Rise of An American Chess Star, and Part2: Learn from Fabiano’s Best Games.

I am convinced that everyone who is looking forward to the World Championship Match in November in London between Carlsen and Caruana will love this accessible, enlightening and entertaining book.
